The incident began in Bridgeport around 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 9, when police received a report of shots fired.

Early information indicated a woman shot a firearm from the third-floor window of a multifamily home within the 600 block of William Street, said Capt. Kevin Gilleran, of the Bridgeport Police.

Officers arrived, identified the multifamily home on William Street, and began to evacuate innocent citizens residing in the area, Gilleran said.

Once a perimeter was set up, supervisors established communication with the woman as police crisis negotiators began arriving on the scene to assist, he said.

Negotiators determined there were still innocent citizens that remained inside the dwelling. The department's emergency services unit made entry into the first floor in order to protect life, Gillern said.

ESU quickly located three innocent residents inside the home (all appeared to be uninjured). Within a few minutes of that initial breach, ESU operators were able to place the woman in custody without further incident, he added.

The woman, identified as 21-year-old Nilah Bowie of Bridgeport, had been hiding in the basement, Gilleran said.

Detectives located a loaded Walther 9mm semiautomatic pistol in the basement where the Bowie had been barricaded prior to being taken into custody, Gilleran added.

Bowie was transported to an area hospital via ambulance and treated for superficial lacerations sustained prior to police contact, he said.

She was treated at the hospital and released and transported to the police department where she was charged with:

  • Unlawful discharge of a firearm
  • Unsafe storage of a firearm
  • Risk of injury to a minor
  • Disorderly conduct
  • Reckless endangerment
  • Interfering with a police officer

Bond was set at #250,000 following a court appearance. She is scheduled for a second appearance on Friday, June 10.
